HM Revenue and Customs setting the standard on disability

01 Febuary 2007

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is among the latest organisations to sign up to the Employers' Forum Disability Standard 2007.

They are one of 67 public and private bodies to commit to the benchmarking exercise, which measures performance on disability as it affects every aspect of business.

Lilian Clifford, at HMRC’s HR Centre of Expertise, said: "HMRC have taken the opportunity to review our policies for any inequality issues, including disability, following the merger between the two former Departments HM Customs & Excise and HM Inland Revenue.

"Our work on designing HMRC's Disability Equality Scheme has also enabled us to talk to people with disabilities to get their perspective on things.

“We hope that by taking part in the Disability Standard we will be able to demonstrate our commitment to continue to review and improve our performance as an employer of and provider of services to people with disabilities."

Caroline Leon, Employers’ Forum Disability Standard Project Manager said: “We are really pleased that HMRC are taking steps to getting it right on disability.

“What we hope to see is others following their lead and signing up for the Disability Standard.”

The Employers' Forum Disability Standard first took place in 2005, with 80 participants.

This number is expected to be at least double when the results of the second Disability Standard are announced in autumn 2007.
