History

The Disability Standard was originally developed in partnership with our leading members and Employers’ Forum on Disability (EFD) associates in 2004. 80 participants took part in the first benchmark in 2005 and this number has continued to grow ever since.

The Research and Development Group included the following members: Abbey, BT, BUPA, Barclays, Centrica, Cable & Wireless, HSBC, Royal Mail, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Unum.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Metropolitan Police Service, Jobcentre Plus, Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions helped to tailor the Disability Standard to the needs of the public sector.

The Disability Standard was originally underpinned by the Diversity Change Model©. Developed by Shapiro Consulting from extensive global research with organisations in the UK, Europe and North America, the model reflects research into how to achieve demonstrable results when promoting diversity across complex organisations.

Disability Standard timeline 2004-2011

2004: Research and Development Group take part in the Disability Standard pilot.

2005: The Disability Standard was officially launched in 2005, with 80 organisations taking part.

2007: The Disability Standard 2007 is launched using feedback from 2005. Over 100 organisations completing the online assessment.

2009: Based on the successful 2007 model, the Disability Standard 2009 is launched, many organisations participating for the 3rd time. Total participation over the 3 years by organisations representing 10% of the UK workforce.

2011: Committed to continually improving this benchmarking tool, we have now developed the Disability Standard 2011. Now shorter, easier to understand and flexible to meet different business needs, we are confident the Disability Standard will play a major role in bringing your organisation to the position of disability confidence.
